The helix is the outermost edge of the ear that runs from the scalp around the lobe. A standard helix piercing is at the midway point of the outer ear, equidistant between the scalp-touching part and lobe-touching part of the helix. Micro hoops and studs are often used on the anti-tragus. The anti-helix, also called the snug, is located midway through the ear’s inner ridge. This skin tends to be even thicker than the helix and is often pierced with a curved bar or hoop. Many ear lobes can fit two to three piercings, so this is a perfect place to start if you’re interested in a stacked look with several earrings in a row.

If you run your finger along the outer edge of your ear toward the inner part, you’ll land at the daith. A piercing at the area close to the scalp is known as a forward helix and is often done with a small hoop. An industrial piercing is when a long bar goes through the inner part of the ear, piercing both the forward helix and the standard helix areas.

At this time, we do not know when we will be able to offer this service to the community again, due to safety precautions with COVID-19 in our office. The anti-tragus is a small area located atop the lobe. It feels and looks similar to the tragus, but it’s in the inner part of the ear rather than the outer part.

Our strict safety and precautionary standards during and after the piercing procedure ensure a sanitary environment and a comfortable piercing experience. Our piercing professionals will consult with you to help determine the best placement method and jewelry for your new piercing. We do everything humanly possible to ensure you have a safe and comfortable experience. There are several pierceable areas on the outer ear region, which is closest to the edge of the ear. This area is made up of cartilage and is harder to the touch than the lobe. Generally, piercing the cartilage tends to hurt more than the lobe because it puts up more resistance to needles. It can also take a bit longer to heal and is more prone to infection. There’s much more to ear piercings than the traditional lobe earring you got as a child.

Red Velvet Cake at Sweet Red Peach

Each cake is custom designed according to your ideas and preferences. When it comes to designing a cake for you, the sky is the limit. Tell us your ideas and we will transform them into a beautiful cake.

One of my biggest observations throughout this experience was seeing how college students impact these shops. Not only are they some of the most frequent customers, but it is also primarily students that I would find behind the counter making drinks and serving customers every day. I got to meet just two of the many dedicated student baristas who work at these local shops.

There are classics like red velvet cake and carrot cake, but also glorious banana custard cups and birthday cake-style slices. Owners Catarah Coleman and Shoneji Robison started their baked venture in 2007. This year, the partners expanded to a Watts location, where the popular Southern bakery creates banana pudding, pies, and apple caramel, and Hennessy and Coke cupcakes. What started as a bakery by Gabriella and her husband has evolved into a full coffee shop. The bright yellow walls filled with meaningful memorabilia give the shop such a homey atmosphere. Located across from the main entrance of A&M on Texas Avenue, La Gabriella has a large menu full of different breads, pastries and coffees to enjoy.

The greatest satisfaction Christine gets when making a cake is the excitement and happiness it brings to the person who receives it. Whether it’s for a wedding, birthday, graduation, shower, or other special occasion, designing cakes is about making people smile. Christine would love to make this happen for you and your guests at your next event.

It’s good to get on Vance’s email list to stay on top of her Southern-style dinners prepared weekly for pick-up. This Danish bakery has some of the best sweet treats in the city, with items like almondy kringles, raspberry Danishes, nougat crowns, braided cinnamon lines, and more, all for very fair prices. The third generation of family members operates 27th Street Bakery. It’s in the historic South Central core, and has watched the entire city shift and change over decades all while making sweet potato and pecan pie, carrot cake, and a wonderful sock-it-to-me cake. The fluffiest cake layered with our signature whipped cream frosting and fresh berries.

She’s succeeded with this weekend-only kiosk in Chinatown serving plant-based croissants and other baked specialities that are as gorgeous as they are delicious. To learn more about Gabriella and the story behind her coffee shop, listen to this audio story. I've gotten them for myself and to cheer up a grieving friend and they always make life better. For your next celebration or just as a special treat, let TSB bake you something that will surely make you smile.

This charming little French patisserie and bakery in Redondo Beach comes from Guillaume and Deborah, who had previously served their specialties in farmers markets across LA. With everything from croissants to gorgeous fruit tarts, the South Bay spot is destined to become a neighborhood favorite.

One historic South Central bakery started churning out baked goods in 1956. Popular Eastside bakery Bub & Grandma’s has a tight menu of croissants, donuts, and American-style diner sweets like chocolate cream pie at its Glassell Park restaurant. Expect flavors to hew toward classic and balanced versus overly sweet. This pandemic bakery first opened at celebrity chef Curtis Stone’s Beverly Hills restaurant Maude in lieu of the Michelin-star restaurant’s tasting menu. Stone is also opening Pie Room at the buzzy Topanga Social at Westfield Topanga in Canoga Park. Popular Inglewood bakery Sweet Red Peach turns out some of the finest homestyle cakes and sweets in Los Angeles.

Explainer: How the House of Representatives Elects a Speaker

previous speaker of the house

The primary role of the Speaker of the House is to preside over the House of Representatives. The speaker is chosen by majority vote of that body, usually along strictly partisan lines. 24Mike Johnson was elected Speaker on October 25, 2023, to fill the vacancy caused by the removal of Speaker McCarthy from the Speakership pursuant to H. Ryan was elected Speaker on October 29, 2015, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Speaker Boehner.

Jim Jordan fails to win House speakership on first ballot

The GOP won big that year behind the Electoral College landslide of Ronald Reagan, taking control of the Senate and gaining enough seats in the House to give Reagan a working majority of Republicans and conservative Democrats. Northern and liberal Democrats became frustrated with O'Neill in subsequent years, even as O'Neill's comfy personal relationship with Reagan enabled a modus operandi between the branches. O'Neill finished a full decade in power before retiring in declining health after the 1986 elections had restored Democratic control in the Senate. Though it holds immense power, the House speakership seems like the worst job in Washington these days. Current Speaker John Boehner wants to leave, but after House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy suddenly dropped out of the contest, it could be anybody's race.

House Speaker kicks Pierre Poilievre out of Commons over unparliamentary comments

House of Representatives, who is elected by the majority party to lead the House. The speaker presides over debate, appoints members of select and conference committees, establishes the legislative agenda, maintains order within the House, and administers the oath of office to House members. The individual in this office is second in the line of presidential succession, following the vice president. At the time, he was still the party's No. 2, but longtime GOP leader Bob Michel was retiring, and Gingrich masterminded the "Contract with America" and other media strategies that focused voter anger on the Democrats. Leading his people to the promised land after 40 years in the minority made Gingrich a kind of Moses, but only for a brief moment.

December 1833

His rank and file demanded confrontation with Clinton, which resulted in government shutdowns in late 1995 and early 1996. These backfired, helping Clinton revive his own popularity and win a second term, while Republicans saw their margin of control narrow in the House. In 1997, several members of Gingrich's leadership team were involved in an abortive coup d'etat against him.

Jordan sent the conference home for the weekend following Friday’s party votes, and lawmakers said he planned to use the time to speak with his opponents and try to win them over. Only four Republicans can break with the pack in order for a GOP speaker to be seated. When McCarthy was booted from the speaker’s office, he lost just eight Republicans of his 221-member conference. McCarthy had been House speaker since January, when he won the gavel after 15 rounds of balloting.

This was supposed to be Kevin McCarthy's moment. Instead, GOP chaos reigns

First, they are the most visible and authoritative spokesperson for the majority party in the House. Speakers articulate an agenda and explain legislative action to other Washington officials as well as the public. They oversee House committee assignments and collaborate with the powerful House Rules Committee to structure floor debate. Jordan or any other Republican speaker candidate can only afford to lose four GOP votes when the House votes for speaker, if all members are voting, because winning a speaker vote requires a majority of the full House.

Hastert was speaker through the last two Clinton years and first six of the George W. Bush presidency. But he voluntarily resigned after the GOP lost badly in the 2006 midterms, a defeat Bush called "a thumpin' " at the time. Whichever party holds the majority on the House side of the Capitol typically elects its leader as the speaker on the first day of the new Congress. Each party nominates its leader and the majority has the most votes and prevails, even if a few members of the majority party defect or vote "present" or just don't show up. But beginning with the first ballot for speaker on Tuesday, at least 19 Republicans voted for someone other than their party nominee, Kevin McCarthy of California. That meant McCarthy did not have enough votes to be speaker, and neither did anyone else.

But this time around several Democrats have indicated they would cross the aisle to support Johnson and frustrate Greene & Co. if it came to a vote. Democratic leaders have indicated they are open to this, and it essentially repeats the strategy that allowed Johnson to pass the Ukraine portion of the aid bill earlier this month. Two colleagues had spoken up to say they would join Greene in such a vote, giving her enough to defeat the speaker if all the chamber's Democrats voted to do the same. That's what the Democrats did when a motion to vacate the chair ousted the last Republican speaker, Kevin McCarthy, last fall. The first official building housing the offices of House members was opened in 1908 and called the House Office Building. It stands as a monument both to the preeminence of the speakership and the impermanence of power.

Prior to the GOP's 40-year sentence as the minority party, several of its speakers had risen to the top rung largely on their personal popularity among their colleagues. One was Joseph Martin of Massachusetts, who led the party in the House during two brief interludes of majority status after World War II. Both lasted only the minimum two years, the first ending with Democratic Harry S. Truman's surprise White House win in 1948. Martin was back four years later when Eisenhower was first elected president in 1952, but that tour at the top was cut short by his party's sharp losses two years later. Like Johnson an era later, Hastert was a relatively quiet member of the leadership who enjoyed goodwill generally in the rank and file.

From early in its existence, the speaker's primary function had been to keep order and enforce rules. Furthermore, when no candidate received an Electoral College majority in the 1824 presidential election, causing the president to be elected by the House, Speaker Clay threw his support to John Quincy Adams instead of Andrew Jackson, thereby ensuring Adams' victory. Following Clay's retirement in 1825, the power of the speakership once again began to decline, despite speakership elections becoming increasingly bitter. As the Civil War approached, several sectional factions nominated their own candidates, often making it difficult for any candidate to attain a majority. In 1855 and again in 1859, for example, the contest for speaker lasted for two months before the House achieved a result.

In 1997, several Republican congressional leaders tried to force Speaker Newt Gingrich to resign. However, Gingrich refused since that would have required a new election for speaker, which could have led to Democrats along with dissenting Republicans voting for Democrat Dick Gephardt (then minority leader) as speaker. After the 1998 midterm elections where the Republicans lost seats, Gingrich did not stand for re-election. The next two figures in the House Republican leadership hierarchy, Majority Leader Richard Armey and Majority Whip Tom DeLay chose not to run for the office.

previous speaker of the house

If all Democrats vote for the Democratic leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, that means Republicans must find 218 votes from their conference for whomever they put up. On the other hand, when the speaker and the president belong to opposite parties, the public role and influence of the speaker tend to increase. As the highest-ranking member of the opposition party (and de facto leader of the opposition), the speaker is normally the chief public opponent of the president's agenda. In this scenario, the speaker is known for undercutting the president's agenda by blocking measures by the minority party or rejecting bills by the Senate.

Ryan also had a strained relationship with then-President Donald Trump, with whom he had a falling out during the fall 2016 campaign. In April 2018, Ryan said he would not serve another term and left as the party was losing its majority that fall. An election for speaker took place on January 3, 2021, at the start of the 117th Congress, two months after the 2020 elections in which Democrats won a slim majority of the seats. An election for speaker took place on January 6, 2009, on the opening day of the 111th Congress, two months after the 2008 elections in which Democrats won a majority of the seats. Nancy Pelosi received a majority of the votes cast and was re-elected speaker. An election for speaker took place on January 4, 2005, on the opening day of the 109th Congress, two months after the 2004 elections in which Republicans won a majority of the seats.

Paul Davis Ryan (born January 29, 1970) is an American politician who served as the 54th speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he was the vice presidential nominee in the 2012 election with Mitt Romney, but they lost to incumbent President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. In 1989 Speaker Jim Wright of Texas resigned under pressure following revelations about a book deal the House Ethics Committee saw as circumventing fundraising rules. Longworth's successor, John "Cactus Jack" Garner of Texas, left the office after just over a year to be Franklin Roosevelt's first vice president. Ryan, then just 45, was the youngest speaker in nearly 150 years but had already been party's vice presidential nominee on the 2012 ticket. Once he had Boehner's job, however, he experienced much the same internal strife.

He was chairman of the Rules Committee and he determined which bills and amendments would be allowed on the floor and which members would be permitted to speak. McCarthy had resisted this as it would essentially put his job on the line on a daily, even hourly, basis. But in his last rounds of attempting to secure votes, he was reported to have given in even on this issue. For some of McCarthy's critics, a major motivation has been the decentralization of authority in the chamber. They want less reliance on the leadership and more empowerment of the committee chairs.

Speaker of the U S. House of Representatives Definition & Facts

previous speaker of the house

Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, the vice conference chair and Judiciary member, is making calls for speaker, according to a source. The White House offered reaction to the House Republicans’ continued failure to elect a speaker after another loss for Rep. Jim Jordan Friday, calling out the “chaotic infighting” on the other side of Pennsylvania Avenue. Then, on Oct. 3, McCarthy became the first House speaker in history to be removed by a motion to vacate. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi introduces the presidential nomination process at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.

December 1851

He was ousted on October 3 after a small minority of his narrow majority – just eight Republicans – voted to remove him. The power of the speaker was greatly augmented during the tenure of the Republican Thomas Brackett Reed (1889–1891, 1895–1899). Reed, however, declared that members who were in the chamber but refused to vote would still count for the purposes of determining a quorum. Through these and other rulings, Reed ensured that the Democrats could not block the Republican agenda.

Your generous support enables the National Constitution Center to hear the best arguments on all sides of the constitutional issues at the center of American life. As a private, nonprofit organization, we rely on support from corporations, foundations, and individuals. Jordan was asked specifically about GOP Rep. Ken Buck’s concerns over his past statements on the 2020 election, Jordan doubled down insisting a vast majority of GOP members objected.

By the fall of the next year, the pushback known as the Tea Party movement was at high tide, and Pelosi's Democrats lost more than 60 seats, the worst loss of House seats for the party since 1938. The first speaker of the House whom living Americans might still remember is Sam Rayburn, the legendary leader of the Democrats in the House from 1940 until his death in 1961. Rayburn was speaker for all but four of those years, stepping down twice when Republicans seized the majority in 1946 and 1952 (losing it again, both times, after just two years).

During the mid-1970s, the power of the speakership once again grew under Democrat Carl Albert. The Committee on Rules ceased to be a semi-independent panel, as it had been since 1910. Moreover, in 1975, the speaker was granted the authority to appoint a majority of the members of the Rules Committee.

At other times, more junior members may be assigned to preside to give them experience with the rules and procedures of the House. The speaker may also designate, with approval of the House, a speaker pro tempore for special purposes, such as designating a representative whose district is near Washington, D.C. The first woman to serve as leader of either party in either chamber of Congress, Pelosi acceded to the speakership in January 2007 when the Democrats reclaimed control of both chambers following 12 years in the minority. As that Congress began, President George W. Bush was still wrestling with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and before that Congress was over the entire federal government was reeling from a stock market crash and a looming recession. Pelosi got reinforcements in the election of 2008, along with a Democratic president to work with in Barack Obama. But reaction to these new laws, and to Obama himself, began to register as early as the town hall meetings that House members held in the summer of 2009.

Jordan did not answer when pressed on if he would acknowledge former President Donald Trump lost the election, as Buck has said it is important for a GOP speaker to do. Last night after meeting with Jordan, Buck said he is still a “no” on the floor. Jordan said he “hopes” to be speaker by the end of the day and “we will find out here pretty soon” if he has the votes on the floor. But the party also has a collective political interest in watching Republicans squirm. While he cut deals to keep the government open and raise the debt ceiling, he also recently initiated an official impeachment inquiry against Biden. And he refused to put some bills that had widespread bipartisan support – such as a defense authorization bill – on the House floor without partisan additions.

20Thomas Foley was elected Speaker on June 6, 1989, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Speaker Wright. 16Samuel Rayburn was elected Speaker on September 16, 1940, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Speaker William Bankhead. 14William Bankhead was elected Speaker on June 4, 1936, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Speaker Byrns. 6John Bell was elected Speaker on June 2, 1834, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Speaker Stevenson. 5Speaker Andrew Stevenson resigned from the House of Representatives on June 2, 1834.

An election for speaker took place on March 4, 1869, at the start of the 41st Congress, following the 1868–69 elections in which Republicans won a majority of the seats. James G. Over the past few months, a string of Republican resignations and an expulsion have continued to shrink the party's historically tight majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, leaving Speaker Mike Johnson with the wiggle room of one Republican vote on party line issues. Republicans, even those who supported the process, were severely disappointed it had come to this. With one of the most narrow House majorities in modern times, Johnson can only afford to lose a single vote or two from his Republican ranks to pass any bill.

8Theodore Pomeroy was elected Speaker on March 3, 1869, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Speaker Colfax, and served one day. “They come into our democratic institutions, they break all the rules, and when they are called on breaking all of the rules, they leave and say they’ve been gagged,” Mr. MacKinnon said. Both the Bloc and the Conservatives called for Mr. Fergus’s resignation after he appeared in a partisan video in December. On Wednesday, Bloc House Leader Alain Therrien said his party’s position hasn’t changed since last year.

For example, from 1839 to 1863 there were eleven speakers, only one of whom served for more than one term. James K. Polk is the only speaker of the House who was later elected president of the United States. Stepping up after a decade in the House majority leader role, Wright had big plans from the beginning. His party had regained control of the Senate, and President Reagan was nearing the end of his second term.

Charlotte Wells On Her Feature Debut 'Aftersun': 'It Became Personal'

We see Calum and Sophie going through opposite reactions in their journey of aging. Like many kids, she sees being an adult as a much more exciting possibility than childhood. However, he eventually escapes and falls away from adult Sophie before she turns into a child. Fortunately, though, our dates shifted and we still hadn’t quite cracked the casting of Calum yet, so he came back into consideration. He put in so much work on set to build a genuine connection with Frankie, and I think I could see from the first meeting we had that he cares deeply about the film.

Director Charlotte Wells on her debut Aftersun — the most lauded British film of the year

Our music supervisor had originally asked me to come up with alternatives for “Losing My Religion,” which was a problem because I felt that nothing else would be remotely appropriate. The lyrics in that scene are going to be read into, it’s completely unavoidable. I had chosen that song instinctively; it was probably the first song I ever knew all the words to at age 5 or 6. That’s a completely absurd image now, but it’s the product of having had young parents, I’m sure. But it was a song I have strong emotions about, that I connect to my dad and I’m really grateful we got it. I also have to give credit to Frankie because we only had one and a half takes to get it.

But yes, tai chi and raving are coping mechanisms for different sides of Calum. Making a feature film, though, meant toiling over every detail, carefully sculpting the film’s precise but organic flow. “I was always preoccupied with keeping a record of things visually,” Wells said, describing how she shot friends and parties, including a last-day-of-school celebration before reluctantly changing schools. Romanski and Jenkins signed on to produce through Pastel, their production company formed with the intention of enabling young directors similar to how Plan B helped them make Moonlight. But I’d also like them to come away knowing that memory is a very powerful thing, and it’s warm. For Calum, it’s something he will never get to look forward to or dread again, because he’s now forever frozen in his early 30s.

“Collaboration” before “Convention”: Aiko Masubuchi and the Future of Japanese Film

Frankie Curio is extraordinary as young Sophie and Paul Mescal brilliantly depict the complexity of Calum’s character. It is exciting to think of Charlotte Wells’ future endeavors after this promising debut. Which isn’t to say you don’t consider the audience, but consciously trying to cater to other people while using it as a medium of self-expression seems a dangerous path to walk.

How Does Aftersun End?

Spent most of my life in various parts of Illinois, including attending college in Evanston. I have been a life long lover of pop culture, especially television, turned that passion into writing about all things entertainment related. When I'm not writing about pop culture, I can be found channeling Gordon Ramsay by kicking people out the kitchen.

Her reflections become a powerful and heartbreaking portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the dad she knew with the man she didn’t. Twenty years after she last saw Calum, Sophie reflects on that time, which they spent together in a Turkish holiday resort. Slowly creeping into adolescence, Sophie is trying to uncover her sexuality, and spending rare time with her young father, often mistaken for her brother. The camera was a record he had for himself that Sophie now has. The footage is the only point of view of Calum that Sophie and we have. Through the camera, we have his only direct point of view during their holiday in Turkey.

So unfolds Tuesday, the first short film by the 35-year-old Scottish filmmaker Charlotte Wells, and one that bears many of the hallmarks found in her shattering feature debut, Aftersun. It, too, radiates with the glow of memory while coursing with an undertow of grief. This scene is juxtaposed with images of adult Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall) seeing her dad dancing at a rave. Then she holds him as the film flashes between child Sophie dancing and holding her father close and adult Sophie holding him so he cannot leave.

The fear of aging seems entangled with his depression and anxiety about his life. In some moments, it even seems like Calum would love to switch places with Sophie and have the ability to do it all over again, so he'd have more time to get it right. Calum walks away, not going back into the real world, but into Sophie’s memories. You see the strobe lights coming from behind the door, and this seems to imply that this becomes Sophie’s final active memory of her father. It’s the final night of Sophie (Frankie Corio) and Calum’s (Paul Mescal) Turkey vacation. They celebrate with some ice cream and some dancing to “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie (it’s one of the best movie dance scenes of 2022).

Perhaps that is what comes from being a wunderkind with a generous dose of life experience. Murmur of the Hearts by Sylvia Chang was the last film that I sobbed at in the way that people describe sobbing at this film. I saw that in the midst of writing this and was inconsolable. It was so limiting in a way for her, whereas for me, it felt of infinite possibility. People try to box it in, in terms of distributor or the support that I received. But I wasn’t necessarily thinking about the form conforming to anything other than pursuing which films interested me.

And yet sometimes I still forget to point the camera at things that you might wish you had later on. I don’t think that feeling necessarily would ever change, of always reaching for something you don’t quite have. Yet for all the universality out of specificity, there are very fundamental themes that a lot of people can connect with, and a core parental relationship that I don’t think is unique. Even if the one portrayed on screen [between a young father, Calum, and his daughter, Sophie] is one less often portrayed on screen. The film is certainly open, and I have seen people bring many different kinds of experiences to it, but that was certainly an unintended expression – yet it was so immediately legible to this young man. It meant so much that it connected that personally and so specifically.

Because much of the tone is upbeat, it isn’t the saddest movie ever but it doesn’t shy away from making its audience feel melancholy when it all ends. It was a huge investment of my time, and I didn’t always connect with people. The curse and gift of having a kid on set is that time is so limited, so there’s this strain on production to get through the material with the enforced breaks that come with working with a child actor.

It should come as no surprise, then, that “Aftersun” was shepherded along by Pastel, the production company co-founded by “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins and his longtime producing partner Adele Romanski. It was Romanski who pushed her old film school pal Jenkins to get cracking on “Moonlight” after years of hesitation, and she found herself in a similar position when she first encountered Wells in 2017. As a metaphor for the difficulty of giving vent to painful emotions, a spout clogged with leaves is almost too apt.

He said that he was first diagnosed in 2016, and his most recent chemotherapy treatment was just one week prior, perThe Oregonian. For Sophie, the tapes are anchor points for her to remember memories. The things she sees in the tapes are a combination of things remembered and imagined. We are a cultural charity, a National Lottery funding distributor, and the UK’s lead organisation for film and the moving image. Here was the uncommonly mature debut of a filmmaker of masterful control and deep wells of empathy.

If they want to, they’ll overlook the character’s every positive action in favor of arriving at that interpretation. I occasionally see Aftersun being described as a story of an estranged father and daughter. I don’t know what more I could’ve done to convince them otherwise. Perhaps there’s no winning for people who want to see a positive depiction of fathers. As an adult and a mother, Sophie now knew what it was to be a parent.

The look of concern on the mother’s face, and the tone of the school day’s interactions, give a sense of some unspoken loss hanging over the girl. Each detail tugs at you until finally, after the girl has spent the afternoon alone in the dying light of her father’s apartment, her mother arrives to quietly take her home. “Aftersun” is one of those films that lingers long after you have watched it.

It was the only time he could spend all by himself, and with a sense of peace, he swayed to an inaudible rhythm. The father-daughter dynamic was a frequent topic of conversation after her first feature-film debut Aftersun, a film about a father and daughter. 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) goes on summer vacation to a Turkish resort with her father, Calum (Paul Mescal), who lives apart. The two spend happy, precious moments with each other, sometimes conversing awkwardly with a camcorder in one hand. In writing Aftersun, she played back old Mini-DV tapes that her father shot of her, sometimes drawing dialogue from the footage.

The fewer soft surfaces they touch, the less likely their canine smell is to stick. Use blankets and throws on sofas and armchairs or anywhere else your furry friend might like to sit to protect fabrics and make it easier to keep on top of odours. They provide companionship and love, but they can also stink up your house if you’re not careful. In order to get rid of the dog smell in your house, you’ll need to target specific fabrics that your dog rubs on frequently – like carpet and furniture – and vacuum/clean it thoroughly. You can also give your dog a bath to help reduce the pet odor.

We are huge fans of Charlotte Tilbury’s make-up products and rely on the Hollywood flawless filter almost daily. While £39 seems a bit steep, a little goes a long way – so much so, that we’ve been known to keep a bottle going for almost a year, so we think it’s most definitely worth the money. It produces a seriously flawless glow, and it manages to blur even the most stubborn imperfections. For application, we use the doe-foot applicator to swatch it across our face before using a damp sponge to blend in – if you don’t have one, we’ve found that using our fingers also works just as well. The lightweight formula works to smooth and illuminate the skin almost instantly and creates a dewy look. Glossier's Futuredew is also a great option, as it can be used as both a primer or mixed with foundation but is also packed with skincare ingredients.

Like Charlotte Tilbury, you can wear it alone for a light filter, layer it on top of foundation for a gorgeous glow or use it as a highlighter on certain areas of your face. Porcelain flower extract, which comes from a Thai flower, brightens the look of your complexion. Although I like to use the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter under makeup, I would never call it a true makeup primer (too slippery to hold onto your makeup). But if you do want a strong glow under your foundation—one that will also keep your makeup from sliding around—try this serum primer from Danessa Myricks. It has a grippy, almost tacky texture that keeps your foundation from creasing and slipping, while also giving your skin a major glassy radiance.

Milani Glow Hydrating Skin Tint

In addition, 100% plant-based sugarcane squalane locks all that moisture in without clogging pores. The oil serum combines grape seed, jojoba, evening primrose, and rosehip oils in a water-in-oil emulsion to nourish and moisturize the skin. This primer is an excellent option if you are looking for a luminous brightening effect. This Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter dupe also contains mica, which creates a soft-focus effect. Honest Everything Primer Glow + 2HA is an illuminating primer that hydrates and replenishes your skin. I am a huge fan of Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind concealer, so I was really excited to try this product.

Of course, I only mentioned a dupe if it offers comparable results to Flawless Filter. Flawless Filter not only offers a beautiful glow but blurs imperfections. I will mention illuminators of all formulas, and I will detail what type of product it is. For example, illuminators with oil can breakout skin and cause shininess, especially for those with oily/combination skin.

Overall, the Maybelline foundation is a fantastic dupe for those looking to achieve a radiant, illuminated complexion similar to the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter. Talking about the coverage, Both the L’Oréal and the Charlotte Tilbury offer a beautiful, subtle sheen without attempting to conceal your natural beauty. These Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter dupes are very similar to the original foundation and they are all worth your money. By the way, I have some amazing dupes for Charlotte Tilbury Pillowtalk Lip Liner as well which you should definitely check out.

The Glowy Super Gel is a perfect example; like Flawless Filter, it’s a multi-purpose product, and you can use it as a primer under foundation or an illuminator over foundation. While both are ideal for all skin types, sunglow is the one that truly gives you a sunkissed glow. While these shades target all skin tones, I wish e.l.f. offered more shades–especially since this is such a popular foundation. I also find this glow booster is more shimmery than Flawless Filter, thanks to the finely milled powder. But if that’s the look you’re going for, you’ll be more pleased with e.l.f.’s Liquid Filter than Flawless Filter.

It still dries quickly and doesn’t feel sticky, so it works for a variety of skin tones. This serum also acts as a foundation primer, enriched with vitamin E and peptides to soften skin and decrease the look of texture issues. The pearl pigments are what makes your skin look radiant, and the result is healthier-looking skin. Like Flawless Filter, the primer is also lightweight and can work with different foundation formulas.

Whether you’re after a subtle shimmer for the day or dazzling brilliance for the night, the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand offers instant glam for your complexion, tailored to your liking. Flower Beauty Light Illusion Perfecting Powder (shown in the shade Beige) is a silky, lightweight powder that creates a flawless, radiant complexion. These add a dry feel to your skin and let you blend the contour effortlessly for a flawless finish. It’s enriched with hyaluronic acid, which helps keep your skin hydrated while leaving you with a stunning bronzed glow, whether you’re going for an all-over bronze or a contoured look. This must-have liquid gel blush and highlighter is a versatile pearlescent peachy-pink shade with a gold shimmer, ideal for use as a blush, highlighter, or even eyeshadow.

When you mix Charlotte Tilbury’s Flawless Filter with any foundation, your skin will have the social media-perfect glow–as if you’re wearing a filter IRL. This Charlotte Tilbury dupe minimizes the appearance of pores and fine lines, ensuring a smooth, luminous finish without any cakiness. Plus, thanks to the silica in the formula, the bronzer provides a soft-focus effect that blurs imperfections.
